2005 criminology meetings
i'm just back from the 2005 american society of criminology annual meetings in toronto. we had a fine conference at the royal york (though it was expensive for the student members) and near-record attendance. i love the meetings and the society has been a great home for me since my early grad school days. both meeting and society are less formal and more interdisciplinary than american sociological association gatherings: almost anyone who wants to get onto a session can get onto a session and they usually have some interesting things to say.i'm currently the executive secretary of the organization, which means that i type board meeting minutes, scoop a lot of ice cream, and sign off on awards. plus, i really rake in the loot on secretary's day. next year's meetings will be held in los angeles, and the theme under new president gary lafree will be "democracy, crime, and justice." i'll be organizing sessions on crime and politics, chairing an article award committee, and working on a long-term planning committee for the society. i'm hoping to reach out to non-asc members interested in voting, politics, and crime who might not otherwise attend the meetings. i'll post more on this in spring, but if you would like to present a paper on this or another crime topic next november, you only need to submit an abstract by march to get on the program.

Do you scoop for kids' birthday parties? 'Cuz I'm sure we could use one next June when mine turns 3. The Elmo costume would be totally optional. =)
i know you claim to scoop a lot of ice cream and you are decked out in the proper accessories, but i see no evidence of you actually doing any such work in these photos. hmmm...some might question the validity of these claims. in spite of this, i do think you deserve to be showered with gifts by the asc membership on secretary's day.
sarah, i'll scoop, but you've got to give me three awards first.
michelle, just because i've been seen standing around (and eating ice cream) during each meeting doesn't mean that i wasn't actually scooping ice cream too. i don't want to brag, but some years i've basically carried the tough vanilla detail...
Oh! So sorry I missed you. Next time you're in Toronto, let me know and I'll spring for a beverage of your choosing.
Perhaps you need to get one of those maps that tells you where your blog readers live, presumably for the purpose of collecting free beverages as you travel.
love to, tina. i may be back yet this winter. i found a nice irish place on front street.
i'd do a map, but i'm pretty sure i already owe beverages to anyone who might stick a pin in it.
"a nice Irish place on Front Street..."
You're probably referring to the Irish Embassy. (It's best that folks lurking around know the names of the good places to go). Most Irish probably couldn't afford to eat there, but still it's a pretty cool place. I kind of preferred the Elephant and Castle m'self--the Bangers and Mash were cheap and good & you could still drink yourself mellow enough to handle really bad panel presentations.
Gawd, what an expensive little trip Toronto was!
