the hunted became the huntress

my car stereo got a stress test on the way to the office today, courtesy of conquest!, a new white stripes release from the aptly-named icky thump.

the song is the very definition of an "inspired cover." jack and meg unearthed a ferocious patti page original, added a sweeping over-the-top vocal, mixed the trumpets waaaaay up, and propelled it all with their signature bottom-heavy fuzz n' drums. i'm not sure how conquest will hold up to repeated listening, but i can't think of a more crankable roadsong for this week's holiday motoring.

conquest only reached #18 on the charts back in '52, but maybe it was just ahead of its time.

And then in the strange way things happen,
The roles were reversed from that day,
The hunted became the huntress,
The hunter became the prey.

The baseline on that tune is so heavy that it causes my car CD player to skip. [I have a JVC head-unit and the Honda Civic factory installed speakers... so we're not talking about powerful speakers here]. The whole CD is quite good... I like it better than the previous White Stripes effort.

i'm sure that's just how jack would have wanted it. he's the king of low-budget equipment, so that song was likely designed to sound good through the factory speakers on a '71 dodge dart.

Good point. My dad had a 71 dodge dart; to bad he still doesn't have it, we could empirically test this theory.

I think my favorite track on the CD (at least right now) is #9, Rag and Bone.

Correction: My previous entry had a typo... The final sentence should read, "I like it better than previous White Stripes efforts."
