rainiest august ever

dang, that makes it official. tuesday's li'l storm pushed us over the top and into record territory. the 9.32 inches of rainfall this month makes this the rainiest august in minnesota history.

here's a rain poem, with a sad twist, by karen head:

autumn rain

Sounds like applause —
not the kind you hear
center-stage, crowds roaring,
but the same sound
as it ricochets off the bricks
that separate the theatre
and the bar next door
where you sit alone
waiting for someone,
or something, not coming.

More than a few Californians have mentioned to us that we picked a good time to leave MN, what with the flooding, bridges collapsing, and apparently rampant lewd conduct in the MSP airport... Oddly, more than a few have mixed up Idaho and Iowa, assuming they are pretty much the same place.

Sara, such things are not odd. The great 29th is often confused with the far inferior, potato-producing region by illiterate coastal peoples...

Once at a gathering of high school choirs in Washington D.C. my senior year, I had more than one person ask me with a straight face if we had running water in Iowa yet. Sigh...

I found this a lot sharing time with one parent in Texas and one parent in MN. All the MN people thought everyone in TX drove a pickup with a gun rack and belonged to the KKK and everyone in TX was convinced that Minnesotans are assigned a cabin (albeit without running water or toilets) upon residency... I find that such comments in CA bring out the Minnesotan in me -- I start elongating my "ahs" and peppering the conversation with "you bets!"
