blog action day

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day well, i couldn't just ignore blog action day. here's the pitch:

bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind - the environment. Every blogger will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic. Our aim is to get everyone talking towards a better future.

this is a tough one for me. since my personal baseline levels of environmental behavior have been too shameful to blog about, it seems hypocritical to even post the li'l banner shown above. that said, my situation leaves me with some easy low-hanging environmentally-friendly fruit to be picked (hmm. is that an environmentally-friendly metaphor? i mean, picking all the low-hanging fruit is probably not the best path to sustainability).

today i'll start with baby step #1: i will no longer throw any recyclable paper or sody bottles into my office trashcan. it ain't much and i'm trying to do more, but first i've got to right the ship -- and start steering the ol' valdez in the proper direction. maybe you're in a similar situation.

One important thing to remember is the economic value of recycling. Cities can actually *generate* revenue from recycling. Recent spot prices for common materials:

office paper: $120/ton
plastic: $180/ton
steel cans: $240/ton
aluminum: $1400/ton

I am at least motivated by such numbers to say "how much money does it cost me to not recycle?"

I'm late by a day! But our city is really BIG on recycling. We have to sort our garbage. There is the blue plastic bag for DRY things, a GREEN plastic bag for WET and then the CLEAR plastic bag is for things that aren't on the blue or the green list. Am I confusing you yet? It took me sometime to get used to this and sort properly. In fact one garbage day pickup they left my bags curbside. Why? because these bags have to be transparent, the garbage man saw something in the WET bag that should have gone into the DRY, so he took TAGGED IT! (along with the phone number to call the city) I called and they sent a truck with two men to come to my house to teach me HOW TO SORT!

not only did I think that was a waste of tax payers dollars ..two men in the truck?? ohh and I forgot to mention we have a blue box that is for newspapers. The clear plastic bag otherwise called the "BYPASS" bag is only allowed out every two weeks....depends which side of the street you live on for that bag.
I think i should have done a post on this eh? :)

P.s. It's a good start Chris. Better to take baby steps than "giant go no where steps". ;)
