symmetry: 33-7 vs. 7-34
i'm boycotting my star-crossed timberwolves this season, but taking a passing interest in tonight's game against the celtics. my wolfies traded kevin garnett, a/k/a the big ticket, to the beantowners this season, with depressingly predictable results.
the celtics won 29% of the time last year and 83% of the time this year; the wolfies won 39% of the time last year and 17% of the time this year. in terms of 2007-2008 wins and losses, the teams have eerily symmetrical records: 33-7 for boston versus 7-34 for minnesota. i'm sure that prosperity is juuuuust around the corner for long-suffering wolves fans.

I've been boycotting them for the past few years as well, ever since we bought season tickets after they made the playoffs and tanked. They called the next year to get us to buy more tickets, to which I finally replied (after many calls):
"I'll buy floor seats for the next ten years if I can punch Sprewell and Cassell in the face first."
The guy laughed, having heard this a number of times before. Garnett deserves a championship, with the Wolves or without.
In echoing Sara's comments above, I was trying to explain the difficult position of the small-market fan to the lady friend the other day. The problem is that in small markets, you really get close to the players. Even though it's all illusory, you really feel like you know them, like you might bump into them in the street and have a good conversation. At the same time, you know their chances of winning here are slim at best. So with someone like Garnett, who's played his heart out for years on terrible, terrible teams, you become really torn. Because on the one hand, if he leaves, that's the entire team walking away. But on the other hand, he's been so good to you, that part of you wants to see him finally succeed.
But maybe that's because I'm not too big into basketball. Because if Johan walks away, I will never forgive him...

The worst part is that i can't go see basketball games even now that I have moved. Don't get me started on the Lakers and Kobe, but now I can't even go see the Clippers, lest I get arrested for throwing something at Cassell.
