look for me in the right lane, driving slowly
i've pretty much stayed out of trouble for the past couple decades, but find myself on a mild form of probation for the next year. the department of public safety recently sent a letter warning me that i've had three violations within the past 12 months: for serious speed in november, illegal change of course in january, and serious speed again in may. since another ticket may result in the loss of my license, i'm now driving very cautiously.i really don't want to lose my driving privileges, so a letter such as this is a serious deterrent. i try to set a decent example for my kids, but have tended to drive too recklessly when commuting alone. i'm not sure why my driving record deteriorated so badly in the past year, but the two (serious) speeding tickets were both obtained on the way to Big Chair Meetings at work. also, i've been driving a black lincoln with ICUDV8 plates (get it? these were my favorite christmas gift of 2007), so i may be attracting a bit more attention from law enforcement. on the other hand, my old jeep was probably incapable of serious speed, so the tickets likely reflect a negative change in my driving behavior.
either way, i'm sufficiently deterred and doing my best to obey all traffic laws -- and getting better mileage to boot.

ummmmm, i think it's pretty clear that your new rig is drawing the attention of law enforcement. it's been many years but having left the office at the same time as you on occasion (and heading towards snoreview as well), my observation was that the jeep was more than capable of hitting top speeds (and weaving in and out of rush hour traffic at those speeds). i recall worrying about a rollover at one point ;)
thanks francesca and newprof, i'd forgotten that a few readers of this blog have actually driven with me in said jeep.
i'm publicly calling myself out, however, to mend my ways. my speeding is likely a manifestation of two ugly characteristics -- arrogance and disorganization. i know i can be a better, more civic-minded driver.
and, if you still see the red jeep rocketing out snoreview-way, please wag a finger at the enormous nonconformist behind the wheel.
actually, the few times i've been in a car with you, you drive fine. it's the times i have been driving in my car watching you rocket ahead of me on the freeway in your car.
perhaps it's the opposite of the peers present-driving quality effects found for adolescents. you might consider carpooling until your probationary period is up.
