sociologists rank 8th on WSJ's "best jobs" list

hmmm -- maybe academic life isn't so terrible after all. according to the wall street journal, social scientists have darn fine jobs.

i was surprised to see parole officer wedged in there between physicist and meteorologist at #14, but otherwise the list seems to track sociological indices of occupational prestige, s.e.i., and the old quality of employment surveys.

while the high ranking for sociologists may temper my bellyaching, i'll still harbor fantasies about a second career as a roustabout.

Dairy Farmer was 199? That must be a reflection of modern Dairy Farms, hundreds of cows going by in a milking parlor being milked my minimum wage workers.

I have many fond memories of milking the cows. They are easier to work with than many political or business types. Good exercise. Never had to work in an office. Just didn't go on many vacations.

i've got family on dairy farms too, brad, so that caught my eye as well. the wsj numbers for dairy farmers paint a picture of exposure to work hazards, high stress and physical demands, low pay, and long hours:

Overall Ranking: 199
Overall Score: 908
Work Environment: 1474.480
Physical Demands: 30.53
Stress: 64.509
Income: $33,109
Hours per Week: 52.5

there are days i'd rather be on a dairy farm in belleville wisconsin than in the chair's office in minneapolis. that said, the numbers above should help keep my romantic illusions in check.

Monty Python to the contrary notwithstanding, 200th out of 200 does not seem OK.

I hope you don't mind if I steal this for my blog.
