the best advice i ever got...

... was that not all advice is good advice.

i'll take the author at his word that the promise of faculty appointments is "illusory" for graduate's of columbia's religion department, but rest assured that such appointments remain a viable option for accomplished graduates of good sociology programs.

From that editorial: "The dirty secret of higher education is that without underpaid graduate students to help in laboratories and with teaching, universities couldn’t conduct research or even instruct their growing undergraduate populations."

Hm. Didn't know that was a secret...

(Regularly exposed in the online comic strip ''Piled Higher and Deeper'' -- http://www.phdcomics.com/ -- Completely brilliant, if you haven't yet seen it. Slight bias towards the physical sciences (most of the characters are Comp. Sci. grads.) -- but most of the humor is universal.
