Berkeley somehow overcame their low ROTC rankings

Joe sends word of the washington monthly's alternarankings for colleges and universities. These are based on "contribution to the public good" in three categories:

"Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country)."

Hey look at that! We're a top 50 school -- probably not what Bruiniks is looking for...

woohoo...UCSD is #2. I hope I contributed to that rank in one form or another...

I still don't quite understand these rankings, but I can't claim to have perfect understanding of the NRC or US News rankings either. I believe that UCSD did well because it had a nice combination of research money (esp. in science and engineering, I believe) and graduation rates. I'm sure you contributed to the latter, scsuh, and perhaps the former as well.
